Cannot insert combined diacritics

I use IHMC CmapTools for Linux on elementary OS (Ubuntu-based).
I use the US International AltGr Dead Keys keyboard layout. It allows me to combine characters, for instance:
AltGr + ` (while keeping AltGr pressed, then realising both) + A = à
However, when I try inserting "à", "ù", etc. in my Cmap, it ignores the diacritic and just inserts "a" and "u".
I am a French-speaking medical student and this impedes me from doing my schoolwork.
Details:
CmapTools 6.02 64-bit
elementary OS 0.4 Loki 64-bit (based on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS)
Linux 4.4.0-59-generic
RAM 3.9 GiB
I've had the same problem with another standalone application (Telegram Desktop), but it was solved as soon as I launched ibus-daemon.
Thank you for the very valuable tool. In the meantime, I use CmapTools on my Windows 10 laptop.
